Rodenator R3 Unit: A new tool against rabbits for Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group


Although Rodenator R3 units may be familiar tools in other states for rabbit management, they are less common in Western Australia.

In May, Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group hosted a demonstration day showcasing the Rodenator R3 unit, an innovative rabbit control technology that provides a targeted alternative to traditional warren ripping.

The Rodenator R3 uses a controlled oxygen and LPG mixture to generate an underground concussive blast that destroys rabbit warrens while minimising soil disturbance. Users will require some training to operate the equipment safely but the Rodenator is compact, portable and relatively user-friendly. It can also be used beneath vegetation and around trees and root systems, making it a useful option in areas where conventional warren ripping is impractical or environmentally sensitive.

Central Fumigation & Pest Management Services travelled from Geraldton to demonstrate the Rodenator and share their knowledge and experience. More than 30 people attended, and many participants were pleasantly surprised by how quiet the equipment was and how little soil disturbance it caused.

When used in an integrated rabbit program, the Rodenator may be a particularly useful tool where conventional warren ripping is impractical. As with any control method, its effectiveness will depend on site characteristics and the broader control program. PHBG is looking forward to exploring this tool and its use in the region.
