Introducing the people of CISS: Murray Rankin


Murray Rankin is currently a Board Director with the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions and Chair’s our Centre’s Audit, Risk & Compliance Committee.

With his family being in the cattle and sheep production industry in the Monaro region of NSW, adjacent to the Kosciusko National Park for four generations since 1844, Murray has seen firsthand the emergence and continued challenges with wild dog populations, ongoing rabbit, pig and deer issues and pest weed management affecting production and landscape management.

In a professional capacity, Murray has extensive director, executive and senior consulting experience gained over a 35-year career with significant international and domestic business management, Board governance and science based RD&E and commercialisation experience in a wide range of industries including natural resource management, Advanced Manufacturing, ICT, general state and Commonwealth government, national security and law enforcement, renewable energy and the private equity finance sectors.

Along with his Directorship with CISS, Murray is currently Board Chair of Snedden Hall & Gallop Lawyers Pty Ltd, Deputy Chair of ACT & SE NSW Helicopter Medical Rescue Service and Board member of e-Water Ltd, Simplexity Holdings International Pty Ltd, Rankin Securities Pty Ltd, and Capital Angels Pty Ltd and most recently a Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources national Innovation & Commercialisation Adviser.

Murray is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has won numerous national business awards including the Telstra Small Business of The Year, AIIA iAward – Most Innovative Product, 17th in Deloitte’s Tech-Fast50 and Emerging Exporter of the Year. He was previously awarded an Australia Day Medal for his contribution to Australia’s law enforcement and security for innovation.

He holds post-graduate qualifications and is an occasional lecturer in business strategy and governance at Australian National University, Macquarie University and Melbourne Business School.

However, in his spare time Murray loves fly fishing, 4wd and camping and struggling with his guitar.
