From Australian landscapes to global practice: LandSmart’s feral pig expertise

The LandSmart Feral Animals Project Team of Darren and Lachlan Marshall travelled to Croatia to present their feral pig collaring work at the 14th International Symposium on Wild Boar and Other Suids. Their visit highlighted CISS’s growing international contribution to feral pig monitoring and management, sharing Australian expertise with researchers and practitioners from around the world.

With more than 500 feral pigs fitted with GPS collars, Darren brings an exceptional depth of experience. The team’s work helps reveal where pigs move and how they use the landscape, providing evidence to guide more targeted, effective control.

Darren Marshall has fitted GPS collars to more feral pigs than anyone else in the world!

While in Europe, the team demonstrated how to deploy and fit GPS collars correctly and safely. Behind that milestone are years of on-ground research in remote and challenging landscapes, working with communities to understand feral pig behaviour and turn that knowledge into more effective management.

Through LandSmart, CISS connects research with practical management and local knowledge. Sharing this experience internationally extends the value of work undertaken across Australia, helping build monitoring capability and strengthen management approaches beyond our borders.

CISS thanks Lotek Wireless Inc for sponsoring the trip in recognition of the fantastic work undertaken by the LandSmart team.
