Species/Threats: Feral deer

Summary

The project aims to collect fine scale feral rusa deer movement data over a 6-month period (from date of collaring each rusa deer) using 15 GPS collars across Port Macquarie, NSW.

The activity will help to inform management strategies across Port Macquarie and in peri-urban spaces across Australia. Although work has been done analysing feral deer movement in Australia (Comte et al. 2025), there is a significant gap in understanding their finer movements in a peri-urban setting.

Feral deer have significant impacts in urban settings including road accidents, negative human interactions, vegetation damage and infrastructure damage.
