Species/Threats: Emergency Animal Disease (EAD)

Summary

Australia faces significant challenges from large populations of feral animals like pigs, deer, goats, wild dogs, red foxes, and feral cats, which threaten livestock health by spreading diseases.

In New South Wales, feral pig and deer populations are rapidly increasing, while feral goats can double their numbers every 1.6 years.

Predators, like wild dogs, European foxes and feral cats – which can transmit rabies, are also widespread. There is a high risk that invasive species could be involved in an Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) incursion, such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Lumpy Skin Disease or African Swine Fever, making preparedness essential.
