Engaging with our members: CISS visits NSW DPIRD
Key CISS staff recently visited NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) in Orange to discuss joint research projects, build CISS’ knowledge about the scope of DPIRD’s scientific, policy and operational expertise in vertebrate pests and weeds and discuss future priorities.
High on the agenda was the value and importance of citizen science tool, FeralScan, as a key digital asset to record and drive regional pest animal control programs, while acknowledging the need for continual improvement and expansion of the national user base.
CISS was given an overview of the breadth and expertise of vertebrate pest research undertaken by NSW DPIRD, which includes work on feral cats, feral pigs, feral deer, wild dogs, rabbits, mice and cane toads. Future research requirements centre around improving the cost-effectiveness of control programs, using a range of field detection and control tools in concert with digital decision tools.
The DPIRD Weeds Biosecurity also team gave a thorough overview of its work in weed incursion detection and response, weed management research including herbicides and biocontrol, and weeds extension digital tools. A key need – certainly not limited to NSW – is the development of cost-effective integrated weed management for invasive perennial grasses, such as African lovegrass.

Our thanks to the NSW DPIRD invasive species team for their generosity in hosting CISS and we look forward to continuing our project partnerships with you.
